Great Pants...Beware of Shrinkage

These pants are beautiful. There are numerous thoughtfully designed details that make them stand out from the average work pants. The herringbone fabric is lightweight yet sturdy, and very handsome. The hidden, hickory stripe knee reinforcements are unique, and classy. I initially felt like the two hammer loops was a bit gratuitous, but they are actually pretty subtle.

I bought my pair at the flagship store in LA. I tried on a size 30, and it was a little roomy in the waist, so I went with a 29. (For reference I'm 5'10" 155lb. My waist measures 32.5" and hips are 36".) The 29 was just the tiniest bit snug in the waist and thighs, but I figured that after they broke in a little the fit would be perfect. The sales guy at the store said that was a wise idea.
Buying nice jeans is always a guessing game of anticipating how much the pants will shrink when you wash them, and how much they will stretch over time.
My guess was that the pants would shrink about about 1/2" in the waist after washing in cold water, and then stretch back by about 3/4". Well, my guess was off. I didn't measure the pants before and after, so my results are not scientific at all, and totally subjective, but they feel to me like they shrank about 1" everywhere. And after two days of wearing them they feel like they have loosened just a little bit. Maybe 1/4". To be fair, the sales guy told me that the herringbone fabric probably would stretch out less than regular denim.
And now that I'm on the website I see in the info about the pants that the fabric is "Raw", which probably explains why they shrank more than what I expected.

In summery, The pants still fit me. They are just a fraction smaller than what I anticipated. When I crouch, lunge, or try to karate kick like Chuck Norris I can feel some restriction in the thigh area. So if they don't stretch out much more I probably won't use them much for actual carpentry activities. On the bright side though, they make my butt look great, so I'll definitely wear them on dates.

I really like the pants. The high rise, and the straight leg is awesome. Soon I plan on buying a pair of the white Ortega Pants in a size 30.

Introducing our newest pant, the Ortega. Taking cues from the classic workwear pants that helped build America, we sought to create something that could stand up to the rigors of the job site, while remaining stylish, comfortable, and timeless. We designed the fit with a roomy rise, full seat, and ample thigh room for mobility and comfort, opting for a true straight-leg silhouette that doesn’t taper. Hardwearing construction features include reinforced double knees with debris cleanouts, reinforced back pockets, double hammer loops, 1/8” sewing details, and custom woven labels made in the USA. For the fabric, we sourced a raw 10 ounce herringbone from Japan. The pocket bags, back pocket reinforcements, and interior double knee reinforcements all feature indigo ticking, except on the white version, which features a tan herringbone reinforcement fabric

We recommend hand washing or washing on the gentle cycle with no spin cycle for the first few washes. This will allow the fabric to relax and soften, and prevent any unwanted wrinkling, as the fabric is stiff and starchy to begin with. Like denim, the fabric will mold to the wearer and become incredibly soft with repeated wear and washing. The Ortega is built to stand the test of time. Proudly cut and sewn in the USA.
