I've purchased 3 Flint & Tinder wax jackets, each one the same as the last. Stylish, but restrictive. I figured, "hey, if this is what wax/trucker jackets are then I have to suck it up"

I was completely wrong.

A few weeks ago I was talking to my wife remarking how all you'd need to do is add gussets to a wax jacket and it'd be perfect.

I searched, and searched. NO ONE offered gussets.

Then, I went back to Freenote where I've purchased a few jeans and noticed they had jackets. Waxed jackets. Waxed jackets with gussets! WTH?!

Then I read the reviews, like I hope you're reading right now. "Something is probably wrong with these"...nope.

Everyone loves them.

So, I was sold. Well, I would have been sold but Freenote didn't actually have any in-stock (nor do they at the time of this writing) so I wrote support and spoke with a team member who was super helpful and mentioned a shop in my area (Revolvr in Portland) and today I finally went in.

They'd remarked they had literally just gotten them in today and were making calls out to people that have been waiting months!

There was a rack of all sizes, and all 3 colors.

I went in for the Tobacco in Large, and walked out with Oak in Large, but not before trying the first one on, flailing my arms around in all of the motions that I expect out of a cotton hoodie and remarking "Holy Sh!" - yep, these are legit.

The colors in person need to be seen. I could have walked out with both they were so beautiful, and honestly, I may end up with both.

The only decision you'll have to make for yourself is whether you want to layer undernearth or not.

For me, 5'10 190lbs, a medium is pretty much my go-to, but I know I can't layer. These fit in Large a lot like a Medium/Large. Enough room to get a sweater underneath if you wanted, but probably not much else.

I would go true-to-size.

As you can probably tell I rated this jacket 3,297 stars out of 5. So, take from that what you will.

You Get What You Pay For.

This jacket isn't cheap; it's expensive. But the good news is that you're getting your money's worth. This jacket is built like a tank. It's substantial with attention to detail; every inch is top notch.

This is my first waxed canvas jacket and I love it. I had been looking at the Filson Short Lined Cruiser, but the lines of the Freenote Waxed Rider caught my eye. And the quality seemed like it might be higher than Filson, so I gave it a try. And I was not disappointed. This is a great jacket and you can't go wrong when buying it.

Having said that, I think that you have to be sure why you are buying this jacket, because the sizing is tricky. I bought this jacket as a working garment and I'm certain it will be perfect for my needs, being wind and water resistant.

I am 6' tall and 155lb. For reference I have a Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser in size small, a Levi's denim trucker jacket in size Medium and they both fit me well, with room to put a couple layers underneath. But I ordered the Freenote Rider in an XL and it was perfect-for me. I wanted to be able to layer with a base layer, flannel shirt and maybe a vest and the XL gave me that ability. If I had bought this jacket in a small or a med, it would not have worked for me; I would have had no freedom of movement. So, your best bet is to measure a jacket that fits you the way that you need it to, and then compare it to the measurements that Freenote lists for these jackets. I never would have ordered an XL if I hadn't compared. This jacket is a modern, slim fit if you buy it in your "normal" size. If you want to layer and/or work in this jacket, you will likely need to size up.

But, at the end of the day, this will be my favourite jacket. And I'm sure it will outlast me.

Awesome Jacket!

Great jacket. Super high-quality and worth the cost. Waxed canvas is rugged, water resistant and built to last. Great style but durable as well. I'm 6'3 195lbs and went with the XL. Great fit, well built with some room to move around while still being fitted enough it's fine for just a t-shirt. Definitely recommend this jacket!

Perfect jacket!!!

Perfect fit and looks great!! The quality of this jacket is very good and seems to last for lifetime. A bit stiff in the beginning of wear but breaked in very fast. Pattern of the inner lining is awesome, one of my favourite jackets I own

Amazing

The attention to detail on this jacket is outstanding, from the sleeve liner to the body liner to the shoulder gussets and pockets. It's ruggedly built, ruggedly colored, yet elegant at the same time. Wonderful silhouette. Very impressed with this piece.

The Riders Jacket, or RJ-1 for short, was one of the first jackets we ever designed. It is a unique mix of a classic ranch jacket combined with a riding jacket. The front pleats expand with movement along with the shoulder gussets in the back. Construction highlights include 1/8” stitch details and custom metal hardware made exclusively for Freenote Cloth. The RJ-1 is equipped with our signature action back for added mobility. Hidden elastic bands in the interior of the jacket help keep the shoulder gussets in place and allow for ease of movement in this heavy piece. In addition, the sleeves are lined with a cotton/rayon blend to make the jacket easier to put on and take off.

We built this jacket for the long haul using the most resilient materials and durable construction methods. With each wear, it will get more comfortable as it molds to your body, creating a custom fit. It will develop a unique patina as the wax is displaced in high wear areas, a sartorial chronicle of the adventures you’ll have in it. Like everything we make at Freenote Cloth, the Riders Jacket is built to last.
