About the Riders Jacket Waxed Canvas Black

The Riders Jacket, or RJ-1 for short, was one of the first jackets we ever designed. It is a unique mix of a classic ranch jacket combined with a riding jacket. The front pleats expand with movement along with the shoulder gussets in the back. Construction highlights include 1/8” stitch details and custom metal hardware made exclusively for Freenote Cloth.

The RJ-1 is equipped with our signature action back for added mobility. Hidden elastic bands in the interior of the jacket help keep the shoulder gussets in place and allow for ease of movement in this heavy piece. In addition, the sleeves are lined with a cotton/rayon blend to make the jacket easier to put on and take off.

A Perfect Waxed Jacket

I'm so glad I finally got a Rider's Jacket from Freenote Cloth. I have to say this jacket definitely lives up to the hype. From the moment I put it on I felt really good about my purchase. It is a comfortable, stylish, and durable jacket that I can see myself wearing for the rest of my life.

Here's a breakdown of what you can expect from this jacket.

Sizing & fit: I'm 6'3'' and about 175 lbs and I ordered the Large. It fit well and true to size. I own a Flint and Tinder waxed trucker in Medium and this jacket in large fits better than that one and allows for layering. The construction of this jacket is also incredible, head and shoulders above any other waxed jacket I own. The shoulder gussets are an incredible detail that allows this jacket to truly fit my shoulders and gives me a great range of motion while wearing it. The stitching, pleats, and tacks make this feel like a bad ass layer that can take a beating and keep you warm and dry no matter what the day throws at you.

Look & feel: This looks like rugged work wear and has a timeless silhouette that's reminiscent of a leather motorcycle jacket. Take note that the side hand pockets are unlined waxed canvas, meaning they're cold and clammy to the touch. This is a minor downside-- to be fair the F&T waxed trucker also has this problem-- waxed jacket makers please line your pockets. One positive I didn't expect is the Southwestern patterned flannel lining. I thought the red and yellow pattern would look gaudy but in person it's super handsome and unique. The lined sleeves mean this slips on and off very easily and the result is that this jacket feels great and contoured to your body as soon as you put it on.

Color: I loved the color on this jacket, though it looked a bit more like a deep midnight navy blue than a black in person. I have to say that I actually prefer this deep midnight color to a true black since it seems to work with more different types of shirts and pants.

Warmth and comfort: The lining and 10 oz Martexin waxed canvas mean that this is a good 3 season jacket. It works very well for most days where I live in blustery and foggy Northern California, where even Summer involves some some fog and wind. If it's truly cold out I'd recommend layering a sweater underneath it, since the lining is relatively thin and doesn't provide a ton of insulation. Where this jacket excels most is repelling wind and rain. The waxed exterior is super good at that, though the downside is (as with all waxed canvas), it can get a bit clammy if you're in direct sun with no wind for too long.

Final thoughts: This jacket is incredible. I love the way it looks and feels and I find myself looking for excuses to wear it most days now. I think this is probably the top of the mountain in terms of a waxed trucker style work jacket. The construction, style, and details are second to none. I'm so grateful I finally found one in stock so I could get one for myself. I'd definitely recommend it and would consider buying one as a gift for any menswear/jacket enthusiasts in your life. Thanks, Freenote!

Bad*ss Jacket

The guys at Freenote Cloth really know what they're doing. Very high quality materials, this jacket truly is meant to be worn hard. Heavy and warm enough for a fall/winter but not too warm to wear out for a summer evening. My favorite jacket, hands down. Wear these with a pair of portolas.

I am 5'6, Athletic Build, wearing a size Small.

I'll start by saying that the customer service provided by Andrew was the best experience I have had in-store or online in a long time! This jacket is extraordinarily well-made and the finish is next level. Great cut and it really is a true 3-season jacket.

Based on customer service and quality, I'm a customer for life.

Worth Every Dollar

This is my first purchase from Freenote and I am blown away. The only other waxed truckers jacket I own is from Flint and Tinder. The riders jacket is on a whole other level compared to Flint and Tinders trucker waxed jacket. I will be a returning customer without a doubt, cannot wait for my next purchase with them.

Great jacket

Saw a YT article that named the Freenote Cloth waxed jacket as one of the Coolest.

Have to agree.

Quality item well designed with cool details.

Black is like a deep charcoal - and the colourful liner is a fine touch.

Small fits me well…I am 5’6” slim and athletic build.

Will be a staple in my casual jacket rotation.
